VX – GHOST EP REVIEW – 3.5/5

WE HAVE RECENTLY SEEN THE RELEASE OF VX’S LONG AWAITED GHOST EP, IN THIS REVIEW THE EP WILL BE BROKEN DOWN TRACK BY TRACK, DISCUSSING THE FEATURES, THE FEEL OF THE TUNES AND THE OVERALL PROJECT.

VX opens the mixtape by directly addressing his distance from music since his last freestyle video in track

I’m The Man

This track is VX at his best, spraying over a hard grime beat with a cocky, confident flow, showing the levels he is capable of. Since his last project it is hard to not notice the improvement of delivery throughout his verses which has truly made VX a threat to any artists his age.

WRAPPED UP

Across this track we hear the artists Derby’s music scene has been missing over the past few years. With a feature from Lox, Jay Swarve and Kayse each artist presents their verse in their own personal styles. As separate verses each artist is very strong although on the song I get the impression that the artists didn’t hear each other’s verses before they were recorded and the styles of each verse collide. The potential for this track to be absolutely nuts was most definitely there with the 4 artists usually gelling very well across past sets and tracks, unfortunately I personally don’t feel this track was as good as it could have been.

ZILTCH

ZILTCH is the track that we all want to hear VX spit over, a hard hitting, gritty instrumental with the features of the likes of Kannan, Lox, Phidizz and Eyez. Each artist goes crazy on their verse, with the lineup how it is nothing less is expected, there isn’t one weak verse over this track. The whole essence of what grime is, is delivered throughout ZILTCH, you can easily imagine this track on stage with the crowd going crazy. Overall this is the strongest track on the EP with each verse doing nothing less than what is expected with the artists on the line up.

GONE

Gone is very different style of track for VX, on a much calmer laid back instrumental, VX tells his story of how he’s become who he is today and the things that affected his life leading him down various different paths. This track is my personal favorite from the EP as it gives an insight into just who the artist is. I feel this brings out the best in V and shows his true diversity and capabilities in music. This track is defintly worthy of being put on the EP and this is the one that stops the track from being looked over, without this GHOST would be just another grime ep to a lot of people. This to me shows that V is capable of making actual songs rather than tracks that could be mistaken for freestyles.

GHOST

Ghost is the leading track of the ep and much like I’m The Man, VX is back with his cocky ‘I’m the best flow’ that we all love, this track makes me want someone to send for VX just so we can see what he is capable of but by listening to Ghost I can see why an artist wouldn’t want to. Whether he’s been consistent or not V can pop back out of nowhere and show other artists levels and this is exactly what this track is doing.

CRIME SCENE

VX and Staxxy, a very organic duo these two flow over a very laid back instrumental, the two styles mix very well and created the perfect summer driving tune that will have people quoting and singing along to some of the bars. The beat choice for these two was immaculate with the difference in styles meeting on a middle ground which suits the both of them perfectly.

I AINT WORRIED

The mix down of this track is better than the actual tune, although the verses on this track are strong with very strong wordplay that may go over some people’s heads, the hook seems very forced like they thought they just needed to get a female vocalist on the EP to break it down a bit, This could just be me but the vocalist singing this type of hook doesn’t sound natural or comfortable.

LEVITATE

Levitate is VX being VX again, showing his levels over most other MC’s in the midlands especially for his age, his strong word play, flows and delivery are consistent across the whole track, this is defiantly a tune for the car, driving through your city feeling like nobody can say anything to you. V rides the best very well which could cause a crazy reaction if he were to perform.

ALL IN ALL THE EP AS A WHOLE IS MOSTLY STRONG ALTHOUGH I DON’T FEEL THAT VX IS STILL REACHING HIS TRUE POTENTIAL BUT HE IS ON THE RIGHT PATH. As a body of work there is still room for ‘GHOST’ to have been better than it was. Although VX is beginning to find himself as an artist and he has the right people around him helping him do just that. I’m interested which visuals V chooses to do for this project and how he goes about it, this will make or break this e.p and the right campaign run will help bring the audience which is needed to this E.P.

3.5/5
